My practice explores the rich visual and metaphorical commonalties between the culture and history of the Mayan civilization and the rapid economic and physical ascent and subsequent decline of post industrial cities. This has been influenced by my fascination of the pervasive urban decay in places I have lived and traveled to, (especially Buffalo, NY and Detroit, MI) and the underlying trends of decline in human civilization. My exacting hand drawn lithographs have been inspired by my research of the imagery of prints of Mayan ruins made in the early 1800s. By weaving the architecture of post classical Mayan ruins with Native American inspired art deco buildings, I am attempting to make these fictionalized spaces tangible and the works have evolved as my understanding of these two separate histories and cultures has deepened.
